The Day the Earth Stood Still, directed by Robert Wise, is a landmark of science fiction cinema. An alien named Klaatu, played by Michael Rennie, lands his flying saucer in Washington, D.C., accompanied by the towering robot Gort. He arrives with a message of peace but warns humanity that its nuclear ambitions threaten the wider galaxy. Met with fear and gunfire, Klaatu goes into hiding and befriends a widow, Helen Benson, and her young son. Bernard Herrmann's eerie theremin score and the film's thoughtful Cold War allegory helped elevate it far above typical monster-movie fare of the era.  The film earned a Golden Globe for Best Film Promoting International Understanding, was selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry in 1995 and is still regularly ranked among the greatest science fiction films ever made.

*The outdoor film screening on Friday, October 30 at 7pm is presented in association with the San Diego County Library – Borrego Springs Branch and will be screened outside at the Amphitheater in Borrego Springs Park.
